david M. Bailey Concert

What a wonderful concert was held at the church on Sunday, October 4th having David share his memorable music with our congregation and many guests!  He shared all those songs that have given him the courage and strength to continue to survive his thirteen year battle with brain cancer.  A reception followed his evening of music, with the opportunity to meet him and learn more about his life and music.  Special thanks to both David and to the dedicated sponsors of the event:  The Kimberly Anne Gillary Foundation.

The Rev. Judith McMillan was installed on May 2nd as our tenth minister since the church's founding 80 years ago.

Elder Thomas Priest, Moderator of the Presbytery of Detroit (pictured with Pastor Judi,) reminded us the installation ceremony served as a formal introduction and official welcome to her as our church pastor, and to reaffirm commitment with the church, congregation, and community.

'You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.  This I command you, that you love one another.'  John 15: 16-17  (NAS)

Following the service, congregation and guests celebrated by sharing a meal in thanks giving and praise for the faith and joy in our lives!

˙ Lenten Series

During the forty days of Lent, beginning with our traditional Ash Wednesday dinner and service on February 17th at 6:00 p.m., our congregation will share a Lenten series with evenings of prayer, worship, and fellowship.

This year our focus is on the Beatitudes -  statements of blessings.  We will consider their meaning, and relate these to help us feel God's comfort in all circumstances.  Our Lenten soup and salad suppers will begin on Thursday, February 25th at 5:45 p.m., with study and worship from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m.

All are invited to join us for this Lenten journey as we share time for a meaningful experience together learning of and listening for God's word.

˙ Missionary Visits

Several times a year, the FPCT welcomes visits from missionaries living in different parts of the globe.  The most recent guest missionary was Farris Goodrum from Brazil, who reviewed the continuing progress on is bringing faith, food, and friendship to those in the area.

Farris met Thelma, who is Brazilian, during his first term in Brazil, and they married in 1987.  Thelma has a degree in education from a university in Brazil, and recently graduated, with a degree in theology, from the seminary in Brazil where Farris is a teacher. Thelma’s ministries in the local church have included teaching and evangelism, and the organization of a literacy program for adults, as well as a project that helps underprivileged children with their school work.

˙ Shepherds' Brunch

Our Shepherding ministry is a big part of our FPCT family.  Once a year, our Shepherds give a special brunch for their flock of believers.

Shepherding is pastoring - a word frequently used in both the old and new testaments in the bible - the word pastor, means shepherd.  A Shepherding program in a congregation is designed to extend the hands and heart of the pastor, or more particularly, of the Lord; expressing God's intention through the congregation, which is the body of Christ, to care pastorally for everyone in the congregation and in our community.

At the First Presbyterian Church of Troy a group of dedicated Shepherds extend the scope of the church's kindness, grace, and mercy to make the pastor's ministry more effective.

˙ Community Outreach

Several times a year, the FPCT holds community symposiums to keep the public abreast of current issues and availability of services which could help them and their families.

During 2008 a two-part 'Managing Aging' seminar was held.  The first evening featured professionals giving us information on investments, tax laws, trusts and wills.

At the second evening's event, health representatives provided information on medicare, medicaid, insurance, physician and hospital care, hospice, elderly needs/care, and assisted living facilities. All sessions included a question and answer period following each presentation.

Please check the FPCT calendar for information on the next scheduled event.
